SUDBURY, ON - Northern Lights Festival Boréal’s annual Meltdown is back! The event, scheduled for March 19th, gives emerging musicians the chance to compete for a booking at Northern Lights Festival 45, which will take place July 8th to 10th in Sudbury’s Bell Park. This is an excellent opportunity for new artists to gain valuable exposure, not to mention have great time doing it! Past winners have included Hello Holiday, Spencer Jose, and Patricia Cano.
The showcase will be divided into two portions: solo acts including singer-songwriters and spoken word artists will perform between 2PM and 5PM while bands and larger groups will perform between 6PM and 10PM, both at The Townehouse Tavern (206 Elgin St). Performers are each assigned a 15-minute time slot, performing 3 songs, and will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Two winners will be selected: one solo act and one band. Each will earn a slot at NLFB 45 this summer, and will be eligible for musical mentorship programs held at the festival.
Admission for spectators is $7.00 and includes admission to the Townehouse in the evening, for the NLFB Bob Dylan night fundraiser. Registration for performers is $25 per act, and includes a one-year membership to NLFB*. Participants must be registered by March 12th at the absolute latest.
Those who are interested are asked to contact the NLFB office at 705-674-5512 or nlfbvolunteer@gmail.com. Registration forms are available on the NLFB website, and in the office at 19 Grey St.
The ‘Northern Lights Folk Festival’ was first held in Bell Park in 1972. It was a free one-day music festival on one stage; needless to say it has grown exponentially since. It remains Canada’s longest continually running outdoor music festival, holding its 45th edition in 2016, and taking place on the picturesque shores of Ramsey Lake in Bell Park, in the heart of Sudbury. Over the years, NLFB has grown into a seasoned presenter of Canadian roots and modern music, and a lightning rod for the energy of Northern Ontario’s artistic community. Inventing tradition, fostering innovation, celebrating community, since 1972.
