Acclaimed Halifax songwriter will be playing in Sudbury for the first time
SUDBURY - Northern Lights Festival Boréal is proud to present one of Canada’s hardest working and most charismatic musicians, Halifax’s Ben Caplan. Come on out to the Townehouse Tavern on Tuesday March 29th and discover one of the East Coast’s most respected songwriting talents. After the show, one thing will be obvious; this guy needs to play here more.
Having spent the better part of the past few years touring the world over, Ben Caplan is currently touring North America behind his second album, Birds with Broken Wings, and for the first time, his heavy touring schedule is taking him through Sudbury. This evening promises to be unforgettable; how can one forget such a huge beard, unruly head of hair and incredible vocal range, from raucous roaring to smooth crooning.
“A charismatic charmer and a smasher of pianos. A madman and an earnest poet. A strummer of delicate chords and a lover of bent and broken melodies. Ben Caplan is not any one thing. (…) Inspired in part by Eastern European and Jewish folk traditions, Ben Caplan mixes older musical sensibilities with his own soul, straight from his hairy heart. Lyrically, you’ve not heard the like before. Often edgy and dark, Caplan holds a mirror up to show us our nasty bits, singing about the ugliness and showing us that this darkness is the root of the sublime.” – Official artist biography
Sudbury’s own Barry Miles will be kicking off the evening. His upcoming record is a product of passion for the honest nature of roots music and respect for its songwriting, both traditional and modern. The sombreness of the record’s themes and characters paints a vivid and often chilling picture of life in the North, and is rendered by an uncanny mixture of electric and acoustic instruments in lush arrangements, displaying the virtuosic musicianship of its players without betraying the nature of the song. Barry is backed by a full ensemble, borrowing his friends and bandmates from Murder Murder.
